A wild Sydney storm has caused all sorts of drama at Drummoyne Oval as GWS took on North Melbourne in the AFLW on Friday night.

Lightning and driving rain initially caused the start of the match to be delayed by an hour, before the lights went out altogether just before half time.

With the star-studded Kangaroos leading 20-10, the oval was suddenly plunged into darkness as the light towers around the ground failed.

With just under five minutes remaining before the main break, Giants coach Alan McConnell took the unconventional step of addressing his players from beyond the fence, while his charges remained inside the boundary line.

Both teams were eventually sent into the sheds to wait it out while the lights fired back up.

Following an almost 20-minute delay, the teams came out for the remainder of the second quarter before staying on the ground for six-minute half time after which they'd begin the third term.

North Melbourne eventually made it two from two in the AFW, running out 48-23 winners.

The league may reconsider playing at the venue in the future given the bad luck it seems to bring - some fans will remember last year's fixture at Drummoyne between the Giants and Carlton that was also delayed for lightning as a similar storm swept across Sydney.
