AFLW 2019: Live scores, fixtures, teams, how to watch image

The third instalment of AFLW got underway in early February, with two new teams - North Melbourne and Geelong - entering the fold to make a 10-team competition.

A revamped 'conference' system, as well as a finals series were also introduced for the 2019 season.

Teams are grouped into two conferences of five and play four matches against their conference rivals, as well as three 'cross-conference' fixtures.

At the end of the seven-round home-and-away season, the top four teams will play a preliminary final before progressing through to the grand final.

Western Bulldogs are the reigning champs after they knocked off Brisbane in the final last year, the Lions' second consecutive defeat in the decider after they went down to Adelaide in season one.

Here's everything you need to know about AFLW 2019

AFLW LIVE STREAM

In addition to the television coverage provided by Fox Footy and Seven, all matches will be broadcast on Seven and Foxtel's digital platforms, including Kayo Sports, as well as the AFLW app.

The AFL announced a four-year deal beginning in 2019 that will ensure every match is shown live, accounting for the competition expanding to 14 teams in 2020.

AFLW RULES

Number of players - 16 on the field per team, with six on the bench.

Game length - Quarters are 15 minutes, with time on only for the last two minutes.

Ball size - A size 4 Sherrin is used in the AFLW.

In October last year the AFL made the major decision to introduce a host of rule changes in a bid to combat congestion and improve the flow of the game, with most of these rule changes to be adopted in AFLW.

  •  5-6-5 centre bounces - Teams will have to start with five players in each 50m arc, including one in the goal square.

There will also be several AFLW-specific rule changes introduced for 2019.

  • Throw-ins will now take place from 10m within the boundary line.
  • Last disposal - a free-kick will be given against a team who kicks or handballs the ball outside the field of play between the two 50m arcs.
  • The AFLW will not adopt the new rules regarding runners and water carriers due to the lower scoring and higher temperatures.

AFLW NEWS

The 2019 AFLW season was officially launched on Wednesday, January 30, with all ten club captains fronting up for the occasion.

AFL.com.au anonymously surveyed the skippers on their predictions for the 2019 season, with Adelaide, North Melbourne and GWS considered the front runners for the premiership.

Despite it being their first year in the competition, the Kangaroos will be under plenty of pressure after recruiting the likes of Emma Kearney, Moana Hope, Emma King and Kaitlyn Ashmore.

As for the competition best and fairest, Western Bulldogs Ellie Blackburn received the most nods.

Nicole Livingston and Gillon McLachlan both discussed the importance of the league expanding "sustainably" as plans to have all 18 AFL clubs represented in the women's competition by 2023 continue.

AFLW SALARIES 2019

AFLW players will receive a pay rise in 2019, with the league adopting a new salary structure on the back of a historic collective bargaining agreement.

Players are grouped into four tiers within their club, with each tier earning a predetermined amount.

  Tier 1 Tier 2 Tier 3 Tier 4
Salary $24,600 $19,000 $16,200 $13,400
Players 2 6 6 16

For the first time players can also earn a share in a prize pool of $127,500.

Each player at the eventual premiers will receive an extra $2,000, runners up will earn $1,250, while $500 will go to the losing preliminary finalists.
