AFL Trades: Jonathan Patton's move from GWS to Hawthorn confirmed image

Jonathon Patton is on his way to Hawthorn after a trade was finalised Tuesday between GWS and the Hawks.

The 2011 first overall pick has been restricted to just 89 games since then with a third knee reconstruction ruling him out of the entire 2019 season.

Initially, GWS were looking at a third-round pick as a fair swap, however when the deal was finalised on Tuesday, it was for a fourth-round pick.

That future fourth-round pick could be Adelaide ruckman Sam Jacobs' ticket to the Giants.

[UPDATE: That's exactly what happened. Jacobs becomes a Giant, with the fourth-round pick the club got for Patton going to the Crows. The 31-year old was selected by Carlton as a 2007 Rookie Draft selection and played 17 games for the Blues before moving to Adelaide where he became one of the league’s most dominant ruckmen.]

“Jon in his position, he’s fit and healthy, the reason he didn’t play the back half of the year was more a mental thing, so what we’re looking at, our position is we’re after a mid-third-round pick and we’re trying to work that out with Hawthorn and what they’ve got and what can go back the other way,” GWS list manager Jason McCartney told SEN on Friday.

“We are really excited about the versatility he brings to our forward line, and at just 26-years of age we feel like he still has his best footy ahead of him,” Hawthorn’s GM of Football Graham Wright said in a statement.

“Jon’s had some injury issues in the past but he’s been in full training at the Giants for the back half of season 2019; he’ll be ready to begin pre-season training once our group come back after the break.

“We look forward to Jon having a fulfilling career at Hawthorn.”

Patton has booted 130 goals across his 89 games and was the Giants leading goalkicker in 2017.

GWS currently hold selections 6, 40, 59, 60, 80, 94 in the 2019 NAB AFL Draft as well as a 2020 future fourth-round pick (tied to Melbourne).
