AFL trades: Hawthorn veteran Shaun Burgoyne has signed a contract extension image

Hawthorn veteran Shaun Burgoyne has rejected a move to the Gold Coast Suns, signing an extension with the Hawks.

It was confirmed by the club on Thursday that the 36-year-old had signed a one-year deal, despite speculation around a move to the Suns, in the vein of fellow Hawks veteran Luke Hodge's move to the Brisbane Lions.

The decision means he remains a chance to play his 400th game in the brown and gold - he currently holds the record for most games by an Indigenous player with 376.

Hawks footy manager Graham Wright discussed the news on Thursday.

"We’re thrilled that Shaun has re-committed to the Hawks," Wright said.

"He has put a lot of time into this decision, weighing up the best option for both he, his family and the club, so we’re really pleased with the outcome.

"He’s such an integral player for us and his influence extends far beyond his on-field ability.

"He sets a great example for his teammates through his work ethic and professionalism, and he is an incredible advocate for his fellow Indigenous players.

"After 18 seasons, Shaun is showing no signs of slowing down which is a testament to both his talent and strength of character."

Burgoyne's manager, Ben Williams, met with Gold Coast officials on Tuesday in order to negotiate a move to the Suns.

They reportedly proposed a three or four-year playing and coaching contract, that would see Burgoyne transition from an on-field to an off-field role.

Gold Coast will now turn their attention to Richmond free agent Brandon Ellis.
