AFL trade news: Tom Scully gets to Hawthorn Hawks for a fourth-round pick image

Hawthorn have secured the services of hard-running midfielder Tom Scully from GWS in exchange for a future fourth-round selection.

In what could turn out to be one of the great trade bargains, the 27-year-old becomes a Hawk for next to nothing, though he does bring plenty of baggage.

The Giants' salary cap situation and concerns about Scully's body contributed to what appears to be a serious undervaluation.

GWS have had to offload several players this trade period, with Dylan Shiel, Rory Lobb and Will Setterfield all set to be in new colours by the end of Wednesday.

Scully only played one game in 2018, suffering a serious ankle/foot injury in round two.

There are concerns that the former number one pick may never fully recover from the nasty fracture, with GWS list manager Jason McCartney offering some insight into the situation.

"It was a complex trade given the uncertainly around Tom’s ankle," McCartney told gwsgiants.com.au.

"Tom’s been a valuable member of the Giants’ playing list both on and off the field since joining the club ahead of the 2012 season.

"We thank Tom for his contribution to building our football club and with him all the best for the future."

Similar to their approach with Jaeger O'Meara and his troublesome knee, Hawthorn are going to trust in their medical staff to get Scully back to his best.

Though they will have to do it without high performance boss Andrew Russell who is joining Carlton for next season.

Hawks footy manager Graham Wright discussed the assets and challenges the Victorian could bring to the club.

"He’s an exceptional player and his endurance and work rate is second to none," Wright said.

"Tom will help to boost our midfield stocks, offering the depth and versatility we were looking to add.

"We understand Tom has been suffering with an ankle injury, however we are fully confident our medical team will help get him back to full fitness."

Wright also confirmed that Scully had signed on a three-year deal, with a potential fourth year, likely to be based on form and fitness.

Scully has played 152 AFL games, the first 31 of those with the Demons after being taken with the first pick in 2009 draft.
