The needs
Melbourne Demons
The list at Melbourne has been well constructed and is strong all over the ground, but the 2018 campaign left the Demons feeling they needed a better key defender than the current options, Oscar McDonald and Sam Frost. There’s no doubt Steven May is one of the best in the business, but there’s a certain feeling of over-capitalising, especially when you add the seemingly forgotten Jake Lever to the list of big backmen. Still, they got the man they wanted and his presence will free up some of his new teammates while simultaneously scaring the crap out of opponents with a physicality not usually associated with Melbourne sides.
Gold Coast Suns
et’s face it, the Suns only need was to keep their captain on the Gold Coast. In any other trade situation it would be reasonable to say this was a fair deal – a top-five selection for a 27-year-old defender – but the worry is whoever the Suns select with that pick will be on their bike two years from now.
The winner
It doesn’t even matter if Melbourne needs Steven May or not, this is at least a break-even deal for the Demons. For the Suns it’s a big loss. The winner is Melbourne.
