AFL trade news: Dayne Beams gets back to Collingwood Magpies image

In one of the biggest deals of the AFL trade period, Collingwood have lured back star midfielder Dayne Beams.

The 28-year-old departs Brisbane in a fairly elaborate pick swap with the Magpies.

Collingwood gain: Dayne Beams and picks 41 and 44.

Brisbane gain: Picks 18 and 56 and a 2019 future first-round pick.

Beams has played 168 AFL games, including being a member of Collingwood's 2010 premiership team in his second season.

He moved to Brisbane ahead of the 2015 season to be closer to his sick father.

Beams had previously committed to staying at the Lions but momentum began building during the trade period that he may seek a move back to the Pies.

Brisbane footy manager David Noble said the club were disappointed to lose the 28-year-old but they feel they have strengthened their draft hand.

"We believe we have struck a deal that is in the best interests of our club and one which also allows Dayne to return back to Melbourne," Noble said.

"While we are disappointed to lose a player of Dayne’s ability we wanted to do the right thing for him and his young family.

"After this trade we are now back in the first round this year and have an additional first round pick next year, which will allow us to continue to grow our list."

More to come.
