AFL Draft: GWS Giants move up to pick four after swap with Adelaide Crows image

GWS have moved up two places in the draft order after a pick swap with the Crows, leaving the Giants with the fourth selection.

Adelaide have gained pick six and GWS' 2020 first-round selection out of the trade.

Significantly, the deal sees GWS jump the Swans and Adelaide in the draft, meaning they now only have to worry about Melbourne (pick three) bidding on highly rated academy product Tom Green.

Gold Coast hold the first two selections and are all but certain to take Matt Rowell and Noah Anderson.

If the Demons were to bid on Green, GWS would have to use their highest available pick to match it, meaning they would lose pick four.

If Green slips past the Demons, the Giants can select another top prospect and then match the inevitable bid on Green with later picks, meaning they get two of the best youngsters in the country.

Their remaining picks (40, 59, 60, 80 and 94) would only give them a points value of 733, well short of the 1,502 (when 20 per cent academy discount applied) needed to match a bid by the Swans at pick five, though they are able to go into a deficit for next season.

It's a risky play by the Giants but you'd have to think they're very confident that Melbourne won't make them match any bids.

GWS have been particularly proactive in manipulating their draft position this year, having already traded picks 12 and 18 away to move up to six.

Last year's beaten grand finalists appear hellbent on going for the quality over quantity approach this off-season in an effort to go one better in 2020.

The club's thin ruck stocks were bolstered, with the experienced Sam Jacobs joining from the Crows.

There have been some departures - versatile tall Adam Tomlinson joined the Demons as a free agent, key forward Jonathan Patton will make his return from another ACL injury while at the Hawks, and Aiden Bonar will be playing at the Roos next year.
