Eight VFL clubs with AFL-listed players had byes this week with several players having to use training to impress their coaches instead of match action.

Sporting News investigates which players have put their hands up for selection during AFL round seven.

Adelaide

STATE LEAGUE AFFILIATE: Adelaide (SANFL)

Adelaide 10.13 (73) lost to Port Adelaide 13.9 (87) (SANFL Rd 6 - Sat May 8)

Jackson Hately responded to his senior omission with 26 disposals, 13 tackles, seven clearances and a goal, in a performance likely to make Crows selectors stand up and notice.

Billy Frampton kicked four goals as he attempts to put pressure on the positions of Taylor Walker and Elliott Himmelberg.

Chayce Jones had his best SANFL game of the season with 27 possessions, while Kieran Strachan impressed in the ruck with 18 touches and 23 hitouts.

After being axed, Shane McAdam struggled to make an impact with only a goal from his eight disposals.

Brisbane

Brisbane had a bye in the VFL.

Carlton

STATE LEAGUE AFFILIATE: Carlton (VFL)

Carlton 8.11 (59) lost to Footscray 11.11 (77) (VFL Rd 4 - Sun May 9)

Tom Williamson was best on ground for the Blues with 24 possessions, while Matthew Kennedy also collected the same amount.

Tom De Koning got through his second game back from injury with 34 hitouts and 12 touches, in signs he is nearly ready for a senior return.

Will Setterfield and Paddy Dow found plenty of the ball but failed to be damaging with their disposals.

Collingwood 14.11 (95) defeated Coburg 13.13 (91) (VFL Rd 4 - Sat May 8)

Rookie Trent Bianco returned from injury to be the Magpies' best with 29 possessions and a goal.

Finlay Macrae also had 29 touches but was less effective, while Brayden Sier found the ball 26 times.

Other Collingwood listed players also had solid games including Jay Rantall (26 disposals), Tom Wilson (24) and Jack Madgen (19).

Mason Cox kicked one goal from 13 touches.

Essendon

STATE LEAGUE AFFILIATE: Essendon (VFL)

Essendon had a bye in the VFL.

Fremantle

STATE LEAGUE AFFILIATE: Peel Thunder (WAFL)

Peel Thunder 14.8 (92) defeated Perth 11.11 (77) (WAFL Rd 6 - Sat May 8)

With somewhat of an injury crisis at the Dockers, there were only a handful of senior listed players on the field for Peel.

Brett Bewley was the best with 24 disposals, while Josh Treacy spent time in the ruck and kicked a goal.

Nathan O'Driscoll picked up 16 possessions.

Geelong

Geelong 17.15 (117) defeated Northern Bullants 11.6 (72) (VFL Rd 4 - Thurs May 6)

Josh Jenkins kicked an incredible seven goals and had 23 disposals but faces a battle to get into the senior team with Jeremy Cameron and Tom Hawkins firing.

Sam De Koning impressed with two goals from 17 possessions, while Darcy Fort had 28 touches and 25 hitouts.

Jordan Clark was the leading disposal winner for Geelong with 29.

In a day where none of the Hawthorn's senior listed players excelled, Finn Maginnes was the best with 21 possessions and five tackles.

Keegan Brooksby had 31 hitouts, while Damon Greaves picked up 19 disposals.

Connor Downie battled his way to 11 possessions, while Conor Nash failed to kick a goal from his 12.

Melbourne

Casey Demons had a bye in the VFL.

North Melbourne

North Melbourne 7.4 (46) lost to Southport 24.9 (153) (VFL Rd 4 - Sat May 8)

In another 100-plus point belting, Tristan Xerri was one of the only positives with 27 possessions and 21 hitouts in a ruck role.

Trent Dumont had 23 disposals as he continues to build match fitness, while Taylor Garner picked up 18 disposals.

Riley Bonner continued to press his claims for a senior recall with a best on ground performance including two goals and 26 possessions.

The ever-dependable Jarrod Lienert was once again among the best players, while Peter Ladhams (three goals) and Joel Garner (two) both hit the scoreboard.

Sam Mayes found plenty of the football, but Boyd Woodcock struggled after his senior omission.

Richmond

St Kilda

Xavier O'Neill played a lone hand as the Eagles got thrashed by 125 points, getting 34 possessions and kicking a goal.

Brayden Ainsworth had 23 touches, while Zane Trew gathered 17 in a couple of rare positives for the Eagles.

Those three West Coast listed players were part of only four - out of 22 named - that managed to pick up more than 15 disposals.

Western Bulldogs

STATE LEAGUE AFFILIATE: Footscray (VFL)

Footscray 11.11 (77) defeated Carlton 8.11 (59) (VFL Rd 4 - Sun May 9)

Jamarra Ugle-Hagan was concussed after attempting to make a tackle on Carlton's James Parsons - meaning he will miss at least next week's VFL match.

Lewis Young took 17 marks in a commanding display across defence, while Mitch Wallis found form with 29 disposals and a goal.

Josh Schache kicked three goals after being dropped from the seniors, while Ben Cavarra and Cody Weightmann chipped in with two majors each.
