Western Bulldogs' No.1 draft pick Jamarra Ugle-Hagan put forward his case for a senior debut in the AFL blockbuster against Richmond with a bag of goals in the reserves.

The VFL moved into its second round of the season, while the SANFL continued but the WAFL was suspended because of COVID-19.

Sporting News investigates which players have put their hands up for selection in AFL round five.

Adelaide

STATE LEAGUE AFFILIATE: Adelaide (SANFL)

Adelaide 16.7 (103) defeated Central Districts 12.8 (80) (SANFL Rd 4 - Sat Apr 24)

Billy Frampton  kicked seven goals in a dominant performance and he could be swapped in the senior team for Elliott Himmelberg.

Veteran David Mackay  was the Crows' best midfielder with 24 touches, four clearances and five inside 50's.

Fischer McAsey  had his best game for the reserves this season, while Tariek Newchuch snagged another two goals in his small forward role.

Brisbane

STATE LEAGUE AFFILIATE: Brisbane (VFL)

Brisbane 13.7 (85) lost to Carlton 24.10 (154) (VFL Rd 2 - Sat Apr 24)

Rhys Mathieson followed up his two goal match last week with another four snags this week, as he looms as a possible inclusion for the injured Lachie Neale.

In another dirty day for the Lions reserves, ruck-forwards Tom Fullarton and Connor Ballenden were both shining lights.

Fullarton had 34 touches, 18 hitouts and kicked a goal, while Ballenden took 14 marks.

Carlton

STATE LEAGUE AFFILIATE: Carlton (VFL)

Carlton 24.10 (154) defeated Brisbane 13.7 (85) (VFL Rd 2 - Sat Apr 24)

Twelve of Carlton's 24 goals were kicked by players that are former AFL players but aren't on the Blues senior list, with Ben Crocker kicking seven and James Parsons nabbing five.

For the Carlton listed players, Will Setterfield had the pill 25 times, while Paddy Dow  and Lochie O'Brien both got 20 possessions.

Tom Williamson  wasn't among the best players after his omission from the Blues senior team.

Collingwood

STATE LEAGUE AFFILIATE: Collingwood (VFL)

Collingwood 6.14 (50) lost to Essendon 12.13 (85) (VFL Rd 2 - Sat Apr 24)

Oliver Henry kicked two goals for the second week in a row as he presses his claims for selection in Collingwood's forward line, while Mason Cox kicked 1.3 from 11 disposals.

There wasn't a huge amount of positives for the Magpies, with Reef McInnes gathering 17 disposals and Max Lynch having 25 hitouts.

Essendon

STATE LEAGUE AFFILIATE: Essendon (VFL)

Essendon 12.13 (85) defeated Collingwood 6.14 (50) (VFL Rd 2 - Sat Apr 24)

Tom Cutler put in a huge performance with three goals and 27 disposals, while Ned Cahill picked up 21 touches of his own.

Alec Waterman kicked 2.4 in response to being dropped from the senior side and Nick Bryan continued his development in the ruck with 30 hitouts.

Fremantle

STATE LEAGUE AFFILIATE: Peel Thunder (WAFL)

The WAFL was postponed because of the Perth COVID lockdown.

Geelong

STATE LEAGUE AFFILIATE: Geelong (VFL)

Geelong's VFL team had a bye.

Gold Coast

STATE LEAGUE AFFILIATE: Gold Coast (VFL)

Gold Coast Suns 14.11 (95) defeated Sydney 12.9 (81) (VFL Rd 2 - Sat Apr 24)

Several Suns players were high possession getters including Will Brodie (31), Brayden Fiorini (26) and Jarrod Harbrow (25).

Darcy Macpherson had 23 disposals and kicked two goals, while ex-Adelaide utility Rory Atkins battled to 19 touches as he looks to break into the senior side to make his Suns debut.

Zac Smith got through his first match of the season after suffering a PCL injury in March.

GWS

STATE LEAGUE AFFILIATE: GWS (VFL)

GWS 10.3 (63) lost to Footscray 21.9 (135) (VFL Rd 2 - Thu Apr 22)

After three goals last week, Jesse Hogan kicked another four as he looks an almost certainty to make his Giants debut this week.

Many Giants struggled in the belting but Kieren Briggs battled hard with 31 hitouts, 15 disposals and a goal.

Hawthorn

STATE LEAGUE AFFILATE: BOX HILL (VFL)

Box Hill 17.10 (112) defeated Northern Bullants 8.8 (56) (VFL Rd 2 - Sat Apr 24)

Emerson Jeka continued to bang the door down for selection kicking five goals and getting 20 possessions.

Fergus Greene  was also dangerous around goal with three majors, while Conor Nash snared two.

Project ruckman Ned Reeves had a mammoth 54 hitouts, 16 disposals and a goal.

Melbourne

STATE LEAGUE AFFILIATE: Casey Demons (VFL)

Casey Demons 13.18 (96) defeated Richmond 5.7 (37) VFL Rd 2 - Sat Apr 24)

Ben Brown kicked four goals and Sam Weideman three, but will they get selected into a Melbourne senior team that is flying?

Jake Bowey continued his impressive development with a team-high 26 disposals, while Oskar Baker (24) and Neville Jetta (23) also got plenty of the ball.

Neville Jetta

North Melbourne

STATE LEAGUE AFFILIATE: North Melbourne (VFL)

North Melbourne 5.9 (39) lost to Frankston 16.8 (104) (VFL Rd 2 - Sat Apr 24)

The son of Paul - Tyler Roos - had 43 disposals but is unfortunately not on North Melbourne's list.

Will Walker got 23 possessions and kicked a goal, while Bailey Scott responded to his senior axeing with 17 touches.

Port Adelaide

STATE LEAGUE AFFILIATE: Port Adelaide (SANFL)

Port Adelaide 10.13 (73) lost to Glenelg 12.11 (83) (SANFL Rd 4 - Sat Apr 24)

Sam Powell-Pepper has started to hit top form with 34 possessions, eight clearances and eight tackles - but might find the well-oiled Port senior team tough to break into.

Kane Farrell got plenty of the ball and kicked a goal, while Jarrod Lienert put in a standard quality performance in defence.

Peter Ladhams was wayward in front of goal with three behinds and Tom Rockliff was short of his usual prolific-self, gathering 12 possessions.

Richmond

STATE LEAGUE AFFILIATE: Richmond (VFL)

Richmond 5.7 (37) lost to Casey Demons 13.18 (96) (VFL Rd 2 - Sat Apr 24)

Ball magnet Patrick Naish led the Tigers' disposal count for the second week in a row with 28, while Callum Coleman-Jones again impressed with one goal, 18 touches and 29 hitouts.

Mabior Chol chipped in with two majors, while Maurice Rioli and Sydney Stack had quiet games, both getting eight disposals and no goals.

Sydney Stack

St Kilda

STATE LEAGUE AFFILIATE: Sandringham (VFL)

Sandringham 9.12 (66) lost to Port Melbourne 13.14 (92)  (VFL Rd 2 - Sat Apr 24)

Luke Dunstan  gathered a huge 46 disposals in response to his senior team axeing, while Ryan Byrnes moved closer to his first AFL of the game of the season with 25 possessions.

Shaun McKernan kicked two goals and Paddy Ryder was among Sandringham's best with 15 disposals, 32 hitouts and a goal.

Sydney

STATE LEAGUE AFFILIATE: Sydney (VFL)

Sydney 12.9 (81) lost to Gold Coast Suns 14.11 (95) (VFL Rd 2 - Sat Apr 24)

Dylan Stephens pressed his case forward for a recall as the dominant Swans midfielder with 32 touches, while Sam Gray hit form with 31 disposals of his own.

Joel Amartey kicked three goals as he continues to play in a forward role, while Ryan Clarke (30 possessions) and Colin O'Riordan (28) also found plenty of the ball.

Paddy McCartin  - who isn't on the Swans senior list - got through another game, taking eight marks and getting the ball 17 times in a key defensive post.

James Bell kicked two goals.

West Coast

STATE LEAGUE AFFILIATE: West Coast (WAFL)

The WAFL was postponed because of the Perth COVID lockdown.

Western Bulldogs

STATE LEAGUE AFFILIATE: Footscray (VFL)

Footscray 21.9 (135) defeated GWS 10.3 (63) (VFL Rd 2 - Thu Apr 22)

No.1 draft pick Jamarra Ugle-Hagan booted five goals as he put his case forward to replace concussed big man Tim English.

Recruit Mitch Hannan drilled three majors as he pressed his selection claims, while Rhylee West chipped in with two and found a heap of the football.

Patrick Lipinski had 35 possessions, while Will Hayes continued his prolific VFL form with 28.
