Patrick Dangerfield was best on ground for Geelong's VFL side ahead of his return from suspension, while Melbourne could be boosted by the inclusion of two key forwards.

There was a swag of VFL practice matches ahead of the season's start this weekend, while the WAFL and SANFL continued with round two of their season.

Sporting News investigates which players have put their hands up for selection in AFL round five.

Adelaide

STATE LEAGUE AFFILIATE: Adelaide (SANFL)

Adelaide 12.10 (82) defeated West Adelaide 10.10 (70) (SANFL Rd 2 - Sat Apr 10)

Jackson Hately put his hand up to make his Crows debut after gathering 26 touches and five clearances in the win against West Adelaide.

The former GWS utility has struggled for consistency in pre-season but after two solid games in the SANFL, he could be set for a senior call up.

Foward Ben Davis hit the scoreboard with 2.3 from 10 disposals, while no.2 draft pick Riley Thilthorpe kicked a goal and had eight possessions.

In a wide-ranging role, Josh Worrell once again impressed with 20 touches, including four inside 50 entries and four defensive rebounds from 50.

Brisbane

STATE LEAGUE AFFILIATE: Brisbane (VFL)

Played a practice match with limited details

Nakia Cockatoo - who joined from Geelong in the off season - continued his return from injury as he got through the practice match unscathed.

Carlton

STATE LEAGUE AFFILIATE: Carlton (VFL)

Carlton 16.5 (101) lost to Box Hill 21.11 (144) (Practice match - Sat Apr 10)

Young midfielder Sam Ramsey was among the best yet again, kicking two goals and gathering plenty of contested football.

Mitch McGovern continued to look solid up forward with three goals, while  Caleb Marchbank  went down with another injury as his luckless run continues.

Collingwood

Finlay Macrae  will be selected to make his debut the senior team this weekend.

Peel Thunder 24.10 (154) defeated East Perth 7.7 (49) (WAFL Rd 2 - Sat Apr 10)

A huge win for Fremantle's affiliate side with several AFL-listed players including Taylin Duman (30 disposals, nine marks) and Connor Blakely (26 touches) particularly dominant.

On return from injury, Mitch Crowden and Griffin Logue got valuable minutes into their bodies, with both in the frame for senior selection this week.

Exciting small forward Liam Henry kicked two goals form his 14 possessions.

Geelong

STATE LEAGUE AFFILIATE: Geelong (VFL)

Geelong 8.10 (58) defeated Collingwood 7.4 (46) (Practice match - Sat Apr 10)

Patrick Dangerfield was best on ground ahead of his return to the senior team from suspension, while Josh Jenkins kicked three goals.

Darcy Lang was among the best players, while Charlie Constable got plenty of the ball in response to being dropped.

Gold Coast

Box Hill 21.11 (144) defeated Carlton 16.5 (101) (Practice match - Sat Apr 10)

Emerson Jeka  kicked another bag - this time five goals - to put his hand up for selection after the one-match suspension to Mitch Lewis.

Josh Morris  was also extremely lively in attack, with four majors, while Ollie Hanrahan chipped in with two goals.

Connor Downie and Jack Saunders also put in impressive performances.

Melbourne

STATE LEAGUE AFFILIATE: Casey Demons (VFL)

Casey Demons 12.7 (79) defeated Williamstown 10.9 (69) (Practice match - Sat Apr 10)

Ben Brown (one goal) and Sam Weideman continued to build fitness ahead of putting their hand up for senior selection.

Mitch Brown  was the star up forward with three majors.

Majak Daw competed well in the ruck, while Aaron vandenBerg and Oskar Baker found plenty of the ball around the contest.

North Melbourne

STATE LEAGUE AFFILIATE: North Melbourne (VFL)

North Melbourne defeated Port Melbourne by one point (Practice match - Sat Apr 10)

Tristian Xerri took the ruck responsibility with Tom Campbell in the AFL team, competing strongly and kicking two final quarter goals in his haul of three.

Port Adelaide

STATE LEAGUE AFFILIATE: Port Adelaide (SANFL)

Port Adelaide 8.16 (64) defeated Central Districts 7.5 (47) (SANFL Rd 2 - Sat Apr 10)

With long-term injuries to Zak Butters and Xavier Duursma, several Port players put their hand up for selection.

The most likely replacement for Butters - Boyd Woodcock - had 23 disposals and kicked a goal in an impressive performance.

Jarrod Lienert  continued his solid SANFL form with 23 possessions, nine marks and seven rebounds from defensive 50.

Trent McKenzie  also looked composed in defence with 19 touches and seven marks.

Forward options Kane Farrell and Miles Bergman (both 13 disposals) struggled to get into the game.

Richmond

STATE LEAGUE AFFILIATE: Richmond (VFL)

Richmond 6.11.47 (47) lost to Werribee 8.14 (62) (Practice match - Sat Apr 10)

Daniel Rioli  responded well to being dropped from the seniors with a dominant performance in midfield and forming a formidable double act with cousin Maurice Rioli .

Derek Eggmolesse-Smith  impressed in defence, while Callum Coleman-Jones looked dangerous as a tall forward in attack.

Sydney Stack  will return through the VFL this week.

Sydney defeated GWS by 37 points (Practice match - Sat Apr 10)

Lewis Melican  put his hand up for senior selection with a best on ground performance and is firming as the most likely player to replace the injured Dane Rampe.

Will Hayward  continued to try to build some form, while Dylan Stephens was played in a number of roles across the field.

West Coast

STATE LEAGUE AFFILIATE: West Coast (WAFL)

West Coast 6.6 (42) lost to Perth Demons 19.6 (120) (WAFL Rd 2 - Sat Apr 10)

Despite a heavy WAFL defeat, Brayden Ainsworth was the leading possession getter for the Eagles with 36, while Alex Witherden firmed as Shannon Hurn's replacement with 26 disposals.

Luke Foley has been spoken of as a possible senior inclusion this week after a solid block of WAFL form, while Zac Langdon and Hamish Brayshaw both had 19 touches.

On his return from injury, ruck/forward Bailey Williams had 10 hitouts as he attempts to build match fitness.

Western Bulldogs
