Tom Mitchell likely to miss season with broken leg image

Hawthorn have confirmed star midfielder Tom Mitchell has been hospitalised with a broken leg.

The 2018 Brownlow Medallist will undergo surgery before enduring a lengthy rehab period.

The club says it is probable that the 25-year-old will sit out the entire 2019 season.

“For Tom to suffer an injury like this is incredibly disappointing for both him and our footy club,” said Hawthorn General Manager of Football, Graham Wright.

“He will undergo surgery over the weekend and as a result will most likely miss the 2019 season.

“However, Tom is a very resilient young man and we have no doubt that he will tackle his rehab with the same professionalism and diligence with which he approaches his training.”

According to a caller on SEN radio, Mitchell sustained the injury while doing clearance work at training.

Tom Mitchell, the 2018 Brownlow Medallist, has been rushed to hospital with a reported broken leg. 

According to multiple reports, the 25-year-old Hawthorn midfielder suffered a mishap during a tackling drill on Friday morning. 

Ambulances were seen at Waverley Park, Hawthorn's training ground. ​


He was accompanied to hospital by Hawthorn's doctor. 

Mitchell averaged 35 disposals and eight clearances a game in 2018, which saw him take out the 2018 Brownlow Medal with 28 votes. 

He has played 111 AFL games, including 65 for the Sydney Swans where he played between 2013-2016.
