The much-discussed patch of MCG turf shipped to Brisbane for the grand final has been laid at the Gabba.

A promotional stunt by sponsor Rebel Sport, two 3x1m patches were taken from each goalsquare at the traditional home of the AFL grand final and trucked to Queensland.

Ahead of Saturday's decider, the turf has been laid in several places around the boundary at the venue.

"That piece of turf from the MCG has arrived safe and sound," Ten News Queensland reported.

"They've broken it up into a number of different pieces and stitched it into different spots around the boundary."

The AFL has copped plenty of flack since the move was announced, with many critics suggesting it was an unnecessary indulgence in a year when cost-cutting has seen countless jobs lost in the football industry.

The sight of the patches of turf in place at the Gabba, which can best be described as underwhelming, have done little to justify the move or quiet the criticism.

If we've learned anything from 2020 so far, someone will roll an ankle on that strip of grass.
