Collingwood forward Jaidyn Stephenson was left cursing his own team's runner after he was prevented from impacting a contest during Saturday's grand final against West Coast.

The Eagles were four points behind but had all the momentum in the third quarter in front of a packed MCG.

Taylor Adams had the ball in the Magpies' back 50 and attempted to hit a target at centre half back.

Yeo chopped off the kick, but Stephenson may have been able to make a contest of it had runner Alex Woodward not been in his path.

Yeo, after a quiet first half by his standards, went back and nailed the set shot to give his side the lead for the first time since early in the first quarter.

That was the final major of the third term as the teams went into the last break all square, just the second time in VFL/AFL history scores have been level going into the fourth quarter.

It paved the way for an incredible final quarter that eventually saw West Coast crowned premiers after Dom Sheed threaded the needle from a tight angle in the dying stages.

Following the game, Channel Seven's Wayne Carey said he caught a glimpse of Woodward looking despondent after the final siren.

"He was inconsolable walking off the ground," Carey said in the post-match coverage.

Nathan Buckley was asked about the moment following footage emerging of him attempting to comfort the distraught Woodward.

"Woody's shattered, he's blaming himself," Buckley said.

"We had a player that ran into him, I think it was Stepho, and Yeo takes the mark and goes back and kicks the goal.

"The reason I grabbed him is because he can't be blaming himself.

"Things happen in life, things happen in football, he was trying to get out of the way and it didn't work."
