AFL Grand Final 2018: Will.i.am defends checking phone mid-performance image

Black Eyed Peas frontman Will.i.am has hit back at critics who roasted the rapper for whipping out his phone during Saturday's AFL grand final performance.

Will-i-am was heavily criticised for checking his phone halfway through singing the group's hit Big Love.

Was he responding to a text? Was he checking his Instagram? Was he live Tweeting the event?

Who knows?

Will.i.am has explained that he was simply trying to share the big dance with the rest of the world.

The tech-savy singer went straight to Twitter to explain his side of the story in a series of posts.

The only thing is, there’s no video evidence on his Instagram story nor his Twitter to support the claim.

And it's not the first time that the rapper has been caught paying more attention to his phone.

The Black Eyed Peas front man is never without his device and has been heavily criticised for tapping away on his phone during live performances on The Voice UK.

Cameras often capture the judge staring at his phone, sending Tweets and snaps to his online followers throughout the show.

Like the AFL grand final, will.i.am has previously defended his habit explaining that connectivity is what music is all about. By reaching out to his followers mid-performance, the 'Big Love' is spread beyond the stadium and the television screen.
