The AFL's annual Big Freeze has taken off at the MCG ahead of the traditional Queen's Birthday clash between Collingwood and Melbourne on Monday.

The event is designed to raise awareness for the 'Fight MND (motor neurone disease)' campaign, led by former Melbourne coach and Essendon player Neale Daniher.

It involves a number of coaches and celebrities sliding down the MCG into a pool of ice and cold water to help promote the charity cause and raise money to help sufferers of the disease.

In 2018, for the first time ever, all 18 coaches took the treacherous plunge down the iconic ground in Big Freeze 4.

The Big Freeze 4 saw coaches dressed up in all sorts of costumes.

Pandas, horses, and firefighters all made an appearance.

The inspirational event began with a Daniher-led march with thousands of fans who flocked from Federation Square to the G, many of which wearing Fight MND beanies.

It didn't end well for all involved...

The Queen's Birthday clash is set to be the most competitive in years with premiership contenders Melbourne currently fourth and the Pies seventh.

Play is underway in the first quarter in front of an expected crowd of up to 90,000 fans.
