AFL 2020: Sydney Swans forward Tom Papley opens up after failed transfer to Carlton image

Sydney Swans forward Tom Papley has opened up after his failed transfer move to Carlton, confirming that he is fully committed to the Swans and their quest to get back into the top eight for 2020.

Papley had a breakout 2019 campaign, stepping up in Lance Franklin's absence to kick 37 goals, becoming the Swans leading goal kicker.

His strong season was rewarded by finishing fourth in the Bob Skilton Medal behind winner Dane Rampe, George Hewett and Luke Parker.

However, the 23-year-old surprised many when he asked to be traded back to Victoria, nominating Carlton as his ideal choice of club.

The deal would eventually fall through, with the Swans failing to secure a replacement in Essendon forward Joe Daniher.

Papley has opened up about the failed move, telling Afl.com.au that the process was a nightmare period for him.

"I was struggling a little bit with some family stuff, which I don't really need to go into," he said.

"I just thought that it was the best thing for me at the time.

"It was pretty tough telling the captains and 'Horse', but that's what you have to do.

Whilst he admitted that he was disappointed that he couldn't secure the deal, Papley understood the business nature of the game and was fully committed to the Swans for 2020

"It's a business and I was aware that it might not happen, the club told me they'd try but it had to get the best deal for both parties," he said.

"But I'm here now and I'm committed."

This echoes the sentiments of coach John Longmire, who commended Papley for his professionalism and enthusiasm last month.

“I can only go from what I’ve seen and he’s terrific, he’s come back in good nick,” Longmire said.

“He comes back and jumps right back into it,

“He’s is a really enthusiastic, popular member of our team and he’s a professional, he’ll get out there and get into it.”
