Hawthorn fan favourite Paul Puopolo has confirmed that he will remain at the club, signing a one-year extension.

Puopolo is heading into his 10th season with the Hawks, having been drafted with Pick 66 in the 2010 National Draft as a mature-age recruit.

Since then, he has become an essential piece of their forward pocket, booting 181 goals in his 190 games.

General manager of football Graham Wright was excited to have the 31-year-old back for another year, despite the initial delay in contract discussions.

“We’ve had open conversations with Paul and his management throughout the trade period, and all parties understood a few things still needed to play out before a decision could be made,” Wright told the club's website.

“We’re really pleased that we’re able to retain Paul’s services for at least another year.

“He’s a champion of our football club and still has plenty of good football left in him.

“His on-field work rate is exemplary and we know he’ll continue to set an extremely high standard for both himself and his teammates.”

Puopolo was awarded life membership by the club in 2018 after playing an integral role in their three-peat between 2013-2015.

He will line up alongside new Hawk Jonathon Patton, who was traded from the GWS Giants for a future fourth pick during the trade period.

One player who won't be around in 2020 is fellow premiership-winner Ryan Schoenmakers, who announced his retirement on Friday after a persistent Achilles problem kept him out of the senior side this year.

"I have spent almost half my life at this football club and have made some incredible friendships along the way," Schoenmakers told Hawthorn's website.

"My football journey hasn't been without its challenges, but each hurdle has helped shape me into the person I am today.

"The last 12 months in particular have been difficult on the injury front, which has helped me come to the decision that it’s time to pursue the next step in my career."
