One of England's most reputable coaches has thrown his hat in the ring to take over as coach of the St. George Illawarra Dragons.

According to Wide World of Sports' The Mole, former Wigan coach Shaun Wane has put his hand up for the role, if it were to become vacant following the club's post-season review.

The Dragons have officially announced a review of its football department will commence this week, after the worst season in the club's history as a joint venture.

Former Panthers general manager and Channel 9 commentator Phil Gould has been enlisted as the man to lead the review, which is expected to bring Paul McGregor's role as coach into question.

In a move to reaffirm his desire to coach in the NRL, Wane has reportedly hired an Australian agent through sports management company SFX, who already manage a number of current NRL coaches.

It is believed SFX have made an informal approach to the Dragons about Wane's interest should they elect to march McGregor on.

It was previously reported Wane had also indicated his interest in the Newcastle Knights coaching job, before they appointed Roosters assistant Adam O'Brien.

With Craig Fitzgibbon and Shane Flanagan the two other names to be linked with the job in recent weeks, Wane stacks up as being one of the most experienced coaches currently on the market.

After taking over from Michael Maguire at Wigan in 2012, the former Great Britain international has built one of the strongest coaching resumes going around.

He has won three Grand Finals, one Challenge Cup, one World Club Challenge and one minor premiership in that time, and his since taken time away from rugby league to work part-time as a high-performance coach for Scotland Rugby Union.
