The AFL has confirmed no matches will be held in Melbourne this weekend amidst Victoria's ongoing COVID-19 circuit breaker lockdown.

Three matches, including Friday's blockbuster between the Bulldogs and Lions initially slated for Alice Springs, have been moved to New South Wales.

St. Kilda's home fixture against Sydney has been moved from Marvel Stadium to the SCG on Saturday afternoon, with the two clubs to swap hosting rights in round 21. Carlton's home game against West Coast has also been moved to the SCG on Sunday.

A venue for the Adelaide-Collingwood game on Saturday afternoon is still yet to be confirmed, while the Dreamtime clash between Essendon and Richmond has already been moved to Perth's Optus Stadium.

Fremantle's home game against the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium is unaffected.

The Bulldogs and Tigers will be based in NSW through the week before flying to Perth the day before their respective matches. The Bombers remain based in Perth following their win over the Eagles last weekend.

Meanwhile Geelong, Gold Coast, GWS, Hawthorn, North Melbourne and Port Adelaide each have scheduled byes this weekend.

The mass changes to the weekend's fixtures come as an extension of Victoria's lockdown is due to be announced on Wednesday.

The AFL declared the fixtures would become a "week-to-week proposition" as they navigate Victoria's lockdown and the various state government restrictions.

"The update to the round 12 fixture has been designed to best accommodate the current border restrictions in place in regard to Victoria while also keeping an eye on the coming weeks of the fixture," AFL executive general manager clubs and broadcasting Travis Auld said.

"The reality of the current situation in the community means the fixture will become a week by week proposition for the short term.

"Although we won’t have matches in Victoria this weekend, we are hopeful to get the footy back in Melbourne for round 13 and the Queen’s Birthday match at the MCG, a proposition we will continue to monitor and work with the Victorian state government on how that plays out.

"The last few days has been a challenge for everyone, but as always, our clubs, players, umpires, venues and broadcast partners have been open-minded and accommodating on the next steps needed to keep the season going."
