The Frenchman, who holds the world record for the 50km walk, had reportedly been suffering with stomach problems in the build up to Friday's race but opted to compete anyway.
Unfortunately for Diniz he encountered the unfortunate incident around 15km in, but still managed to set the early pace and put himself among the podium contenders.
There was genuine concern for Diniz's health after 35km when he collapsed in the searing Rio de Janeiro heat, but the 38-year-old displayed the heart of a champion by reaching the finishing line in eighth place.
Drama in the race walk.

The race was won by Slovakia's Matej Toth, who added to the World Championship gold medal he won in Beijing 12 months ago.
Several athletes needed attention after crossing the finish line with plenty of water and ice poured on the competitors following their valiant efforts in testing conditions.
