The current AFL season may have come to a close, but that doesn't mean we can't look ahead to the 2024 campaign.

In fact, preparation has already begun, with most clubs returning to training this November.

The Sporting News takes you through the key dates for next year.

When does the 2024 AFL season start? Queensland and NSW to host opening fixtures

The 2024 AFL campaign will begin in early March with a brand-new opening round concept.

In a first for the league, Victoria won't host the first game of the season, with Sydney to welcome Melbourne to the SCG.

This will kickstart a four-match 'Opening Round' on the eastern seaboard featuring matches spread across Thursday, March 7 to Saturday, March 9.

The sides involved in these games will be afforded a second bye later in the season.

After the opening round, nine games are set to take place between March 14-17, headlined by a Richmond-Carlton clash on Thursday night at the MCG, according to the Herald Sun.

AFL Gather Round: Matches, dates, tickets for 2024

After the inaugural edition this year, Gather Round will return in 2024.

The AFL will host the event in South Australia again, scheduled for Round 4 of next season — this will see matches run from April 4-7.

A specific fixture for the round has not been made available yet.

When is the 2024 AFL grand final?

A slot for next year's decider has not been announced.

However, the showpiece match typically takes place on the last Saturday of September, meaning Saturday, September 28, 2024 is a likely date.
