St Kilda release 'Pride Match' jumpers image

St Kilda has always embraced its reputation as the football club of choice for those in the shadows of society, and is returning some of the love by wearing a rainbow-infused jumper for the round 21 ‘Pride Match’ against the Sydney Swans.

The Saints’ guernseys feature the players’ numbers in the seven colours of the rainbow, while the Swans will have similarly hued socks in recognition of the LGBTIQ community.

St Kilda CEO Matt Finnis said it was a proud day for the club

“We want the LGBTIQ community to feel welcome and safe at AFL games and free to be themselves," Finnis said, adding he believed the colourful nod to different sexual choices was a world first for a professional sporting team.

He wasn’t quite right on that claim though, with Swedish ice-hockey club Kiruna IF donning rainbow kit for the entire 2014/15 season.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
