Magpies vs Giants: Collingwood's preliminary final meltdown after final quarter heartbreak image

Collingwood are in meltdown mode after being stunned under the lights at the MCG by the GWS Giants in the preliminary final, and rival fans are loving it.

Arguably no club divides opinions quite like the Pies, and the sight of a sombre Eddie after the full-time siren, as it often does, caused a stir online.

Collingwood fans are so familiar with the taste of success, but they fell dramatically short on Saturday afternoon.

Despite setting up one of the most spine-tingling finishes to a preliminary final in recent history, it was a horror third quarter that hurt Pies fans most.

In what was the proud club's lowest third-quarter score since the 1960 grand final, the Magpies were held goalless to go into the final break on 23 points.

The Giants, on the other hand, kicked five crucial majors to essentially place one foot in the grand final going into the final stanza, with five different players among the goal scorers during the dominant quarter.

It didn't prove that easy for the Giants however, with Collingwood riding a raucous MCG crowd to kick four goals, and limit GWS to just the single major in the final quarter.

It set up one of the most melodramatic ends to a preliminary final in recent history, with the Pies parked inside Giants' inside 50 for the final five minutes with the win just a goal away.

But after a 34 minute final term, the Giants bravely held out last year's grand finalists to move into their first ever grand final, where they will face 2017 premiers Richmond.

The Giants will have earnt themselves thousands of bandwagon fans off that heroic win, such is the dislike for the Collingwood club.
