Controversial Collingwood star Jordan De Goey's potential move to St Kilda has been supported by Saints legend Nick Riewoldt.

As the Magpies weigh up the future of the gun midfielder following his much-publicised trip to Bali, St Kilda is a potential suitor for De Goey if he doesn't sign a new contract at Collingwood, according to Herald Sun scribe Jon Ralph.

The 26-year-old comes out of contract at the end of the season and had been in talks with Collingwood on a new deal until the recent Bali video controversy, with the Magpies promptly pulling their offer to consider the matchwinner's future.

St Kilda's offer to De Goey is believed to be around $800,000-$1 million a season for five years, and while Riewoldt backed a play for the star, the former Saints captain urged caution as well.

Riewoldt mentioned De Goey's statement after the Bali video controversy, with the midfielder accusing the media of 'persecuting athletes'.

“It’s something you can entertain as a football club because let’s not forget, we are talking about a serious on-field talent,” Riewoldt said On The Couch.

“For a club like St Kilda, which has won one premiership, he’s a difference maker. But this is all if you have a level of confidence a level of contrition has been shown.

“The statement a couple of days ago would concern me, certainly if I was a potential suitor because we aren’t seeing that level of contrition at the moment.

“We’re seeing a player that feels persecuted, which I can understand because players do at times feel persecuted by the media, that is a real thing.

“But I don’t think that’s what’s occurring in this situation. It wasn’t entrapment. They didn’t send a camera crew over there.

“If you can see a situation where he can be surrounded by the right people, and steps have been taken, then I think clubs would entertain it. And he’s a free agent, so you can potentially get him for nothing.”

De Goey - who will become a free agent at the end of the season if he doesn't sign a contract - is expected to find out if he has a future at Collingwood in the coming days.

The Magpies have also been dealing with another controversy after asking duo Jack Ginnivan and Isaac Quaynor to delete a TikTok video which features the pair rating features of women.
