Geelong superstar Joel Selwood has predicted Carlton’s No.1 draft pick will ‘change the footy club’ ahead of his rookie season in the AFL.

The Geelong Falcons product backed up a strong pre-season on the training paddock with two highly impressive performances in the JLT Community Series for the rebuilding Blues.

And Selwood added his voice to a chorus of respected voice who has lavished praise on the 18-year-old before he has even played a senior home and away game.

“I saw him play a couple of times down here (for Geelong Falcons) and he’s a super-impressive player and also a super-impressive kid,” Selwood told SEN on Wednesday.

Asked to compare his own transition to the senior ranks as a highly-rated teenager, Selwood said: “It’s probably a little bit of a different scenario because I had a lot of (experienced) guys … and was supported by a group of players who were really developed and well-educated.

“I’m not saying that Carlton aren’t but they’re probably at the other end where they’re developing a lot of player at the same time.

“What it will do is Sam will pushed those players along straight away and show them how it’s done … and Carlton’s got an absolute beauty.

“They don’t come along very often so they’ve got to make sure they enjoy him and he’ll change the footy club definitely.”

Walsh is considered a certain starter in Carlton’s blockbuster AFL season-opener against Richmond at the MCG next Thursday.
