The Western Derby will take place without fans after another COVID-19 outbreak in WA.

The AFL had planned for Optus Stadium to be three-quarters full, but West Australian premier Mark McGowan made a late change on the advice of health officials.

WA has seen another COVID-19 scare after a hotel security guard and two close contacts tested positive over the weekend.

The AFL released a statement confirming the Eagles' match with Fremantle would take place in front of empty stands.

"The AFL advises as per Western Australian Government guidelines now in place as of this afternoon, the Round Seven West Coast Eagles v Fremantle match at Optus Stadium to be played today Sunday, May 2 will proceed as planned but will be closed to the general public," the statement said.

"Only essential staff and players will be permitted to attend the game.

"All essential staff and officials at the match will need to wear masks at all times as per Western Australian Government guidelines."

AFL Executive General Manager of Football Operations Steve Hocking said health and safety must take precedence.

“The health and safety of everyone in the game and the wider community remains the priority as we continue to navigate the pandemic,” Hocking said.

“The AFL thanks all supporters for their understanding as we continue to be led by the advice of governments and health officials.”

The Western Derby is the only round seven match to take place with no fans.
