THE DEAL

Hawthorn

In – Chad Wingard, future third round selection
Out – Ryan Burton, 15, 35, future fourth round selection

Port Adelaide Power

In - Ryan Burton, 15, 35, future fourth round selection
Out – Chad Wingard, future third round selection

THE NEEDS

Hawthorn Hawks

The Hawks are basically trying to keep themselves in premiership contention and looking for the best talent they can bring in.

Alastair Clarkson will play Wingard in the midfield rotating through the forward line rather than leaving him in front of goal, meaning Hawthorn’s on-ball brigade is now consisting of Tom Mitchell, Jaeger O’Meara, Wingard and, if fit, Tom Scully – and that’s a pretty impressive line-up.

Port Adelaide Power

No one knows what went down between Wingard and the Port powers that be - although Chad did say “the truth will come out” – but one way or another his stay at Alberton had become untenable.

Getting Burton to the Power could be a sensational result as his potential is huge, and pick 15 could be anything. Having 35 is icing on the cake.

THE WINNER

There’s no doubting how good Wingard can be, but Hawthorn has paid a high price.

Burton could actually be the better player, and he comes with first and second-round selections attached.

The winner is Port Adelaide.
