The AFL player movement period has officially begun, with the week-long Free Agency window opening on Friday.

Several big names are expected to be on the move and some could be confirmed early on in the window.

Here's all the latest trade news and rumours from Friday, October 6.

Joel Hamling swaps Fremantle for Sydney

Premiership defender Joel Hamling has joined Sydney from Fremantle as a delisted free agent.

Hamling, 30, has opted to move to Sydney instead of re-signing at the Dockers, having only played six games since 2019 because of horror injury run.

Part of the Western Bulldogs premiership team in 2016, Hamling moved to the Dockers the following season.

He is a delisted free agent as he was cut by Geelong in 2014.

"Joel has been a highly valued member of our team since he joined the club at the end of 2016,” Dockers footy boss Peter Bell said.

"To see Joel return to AFL football this year after such a long period out of the game and play the football we know he is capable of, was really pleasing to see.

"It is always a hard time of year, but Joel has a young family and clearly his decision to explore his options as a delisted free agent played a factor in that."

Matthew Flynn lands at West Coast

Giants ruckman Matthew Flynn has completed a move to to West Coast as an unrestricted free agent.

The 26-year-old played 33 games for GWS, making his debut in 2021 after joining the club in 2015.

Flynn fell behind Kieren Briggs in the Giants ruck pecking order, with the club opting to persist with Braydon Preuss as the number two.

"We prioritised adding to our ruck stocks this off-season so we’re really pleased Matt decided to join the club via free agency", Eagles list manager Rohan O’Brien said.

"Matt has spent eight seasons in the AFL system and is physically mature so we expect he can come in and make an impact."

Taylor Adams considering Sydney move

Magpie vice-captain Taylor Adams is looking at a possible trade to Sydney after seeing his midfield time reduce at the club, according to Mitch Cleary.

Adams, who was heartbreakingly ruled out of the grand final with injury, has one season remaining on his contract.

The Swans have already brought in James Jordon to bolster their midfield and Brodie Grundy appears set to join.

James Jordon joins Swans in first move of Free Agency

Sydney have bolstered their midfield stocks with the signing of James Jordon as a free agent from Melbourne.

The 22-year-old played 65 games for the Dees, including their 2021 premiership.

Swans footy manager Charlie Gardiner said the club was excited to add Jordon to their list.

“James is a talented young midfielder who we think has a bright future ahead of him,” Gardiner said.

“We think he will be a valuable addition to our midfield group with his running ability and flexibility to play inside and out.

“He has had an impressive start to his career to date and comes with experience in a successful program at Melbourne, so we are confident he will make us better.”

Jade Gresham nears Essendon switch

St Kilda's Jade Gresham looks like ending up at the Bombers in a free agency move.

SEN's Tom Morris has reported Gresham is keen on a switch to Essendon but the club still needs to finalise what sort of deal to offer him in order for the Saints to get sufficient compensation.

In a complicated move, St Kilda could then potentially trade their compensation pick back to Essendon in order to bring out-of-favour midfielder Dylan Shiel to Moorabbin.

For that reason, Gresham's switch to Essendon may not go through in the opening days of free agency, although the Bombers are expected to welcome some new talent to the club.

North Melbourne pair Todd Goldstein and Ben McKay have both nominated Essendon as their preferred club of choice.

Goldstein's move is expected to go through with minimal fuss while the Roos still need to make a call on whether to match Essendon's offer for key defender McKay.

Clayton Oliver meets with Demons coach Simon Goodwin

It shaped as being one of the biggest trades in recent memory but it now appears as if Clayton Oliver will remain at Melbourne.

The AFL world was shocked this week as reports of a potential Dees departure for the midfielder circulated.

Oliver and the club had reportedly clashed over his professionalism following an injury-hit season and other clubs had flagged their interest.

Although, following a meeting between Oliver and Goodwin, any potential moves for the superstar look to be off the table.

Tom Fullarton settles on Melbourne move

Brisbane utility tall Tom Fullarton has told the Lions he wishes to be traded to the Demons, AFL.com.au reports.

Fullarton didn't play at senior level this year but has featured 19 times at AFL level.

The 24-year-old is off-contract but isn't a free agent, meaning a trade will need to be worked out between the clubs.

Melbourne are looking to add depth to their ruck stocks ahead of the impending departure of Brodie Grundy to the Swans.

Zac Fisher requests North Melbourne trade

Carlton speedster Zac Fisher has requested a trade to the Kangaroos in search of more senior football.

The 25-year-old has played 107 games for the Blues but added just 12 in 2023, finding himself dropped on several occasions.

Fisher has two years to run on his contract with Carlton so North Melbourne will need to come up with a trade for Western Australian.
