AFL players will not be forced to receive a compulsory flu shot when the 2020 season resumes in the coming months, according to reports.

The NRL’s insistence this week that all players and staff have a mandatory flu shot ahead of the code’s May 28 restart caused a firestorm of controversy.

While the AFL is yet to officially announce its flu-shot policy, a report on AFL.com on Friday suggested players will be allowed to make a personal choice.

“While the AFL recommends players and officials to get a yearly flu shot, the decision is ultimately that of the player and club doctor as to whether they wish to do so,” an AFL spokesperson told AFL.com.

But the AFL’s reported position could pose problems for Queensland-based clubs the Brisbane Lions and Gold Coast Suns.

Three Gold Coast Titans players - Bryce Cartwright, Brian Kelly and Nathan Peats - were on Friday stood down upon the recommendation of Queensland’s chief health officer Jeannette Young.

Peats relented and received the flu shot hours later, while anti-vaxxers Cartwright and Kelly remain ineligible to train and play.

It remains unknown whether any Suns or Lions players and staff will elect not to be vaccinated for the flu.

However, comments from Suns co-captain David Swallow on Friday likely caused a few nervous moments at AFL headquarters.

“To be honest I’m not too sure it should be mandatory,” Swallow said when asked if he plans to have the flu shot.

“But everyone’s going to have their different beliefs and opinions on this matter.

“I don't know if we should be forcing anyone to do anything they wouldn't be comfortable doing.

“I know others would have a different opinion on that, but yeah, I guess that’s my opinion.”

The influenza vaccination does not provide immunity to COVID-19.

However, medical professionals warn patients with the flu have compromised immune systems and are therefore at increased risk of contracting the coronavirus.

The AFL is yet to formally announce a return date after the season was suspended on March 21.
