AFL grand final: #BigBigSound more like whimper as Richmond hammers GWS Giants image

The big big sound memes that took over social media in the lead-up to the AFL Grand Final between Richmond and GWS was one of the best things to ever happen on the internet.

This is an undeniable fact.

But the feel-good sentiment behind the viral videos of the GWS song quickly turned into a nightmare for the Giants on grand final day.

Leon Cameron's side were behind by 35 at halftime and their 12 points was the equal lowest first-half score in a grand final since 1960.

The Tigers continued their ruthless march towards their second flag in three years in the third quarter.

Tom Lynch goaled from in front, before Dustin Martin kicked his third.

Debutant Marlion Pickett received one of the biggest cheers of the afternoon when he slotted his first career goal.

Jacob Hopper finally scored for the Giants, breaking a run of 11 straight Richmond goals, but things were borderline embarrassing for the Giants at three-quarter time.

Down 81-19 and with Josh Kelly getting treatment on his hamstring, social media was already lighting up about the whimper that the big big sound had turned into.

In the end, Richmond powered on to a 114-25 victory in front of 100,014 people as Dustin Martin became just the fourth player to win two Norm Smith Medals.

There was plenty of this type of content.

Sadly accurate.

Maybe the real big big sound was the friends we made along the way.
