Geelong Cats star Patrick Dangerfield has been cleared by the AFL match review officer over an elbow that knocked out Richmond Tigers player Nick Vlastuin.

The 30-year old inadvertently struck Vlastuin early in the game, which saw the Tigers defender taken from the field.

Vlastuin was unable to return to the field in the Tigers third Grand Final victory in the past four years, with MRO Michael Christian explaining the incident on Sunday.

"The incident between Geelong Cats’ Patrick Dangerfield and Richmond’s Nick Vlastuin from the first quarter of Saturday’s game between Richmond and the Geelong Cats was assessed," he said in a statement.

"The ball is loose. Vlastuin and Dangerfield approach the ball from opposing directions. Dangerfield punches the ball and in the process makes high contact to Vlastuin.

"It was the view of the MRO that Dangerfield’s actions were not unreasonable in the circumstances. No further action was taken."

Richmond took out the flag 81-50, despite being down by over 20 points at one stage in the second quarter.

Dustin Martin took out another Norm Smith Medal following a dominant display.
