The 2024 AFL free agency class is taking shape, with Western Bulldogs ruckman Tim English set to become the most sought-after talent next season.

English is joined by Fremantle ruck Sean Darcy as one of the biggest free agent names, while two premiership Tigers could also be on the move.

The Sporting News names its top 10 AFL free agents in 2024.

These players are not only seen as the most talented players in the pool but also the most likely to depart in the free agency period.

Geelong defender Tom Stewart is expected to sign a new contract ahead of the season, while Tom Liberatore appears committed to the Western Bulldogs' cause despite ongoing contract talks. Neither have been included on this list.

1. Tim English

Restricted Free Agent

No surprise, last season's All-Australian ruckman is leading the 2024 free agency charge. The Western Australian is set to be heavily targeted by West Coast and Fremantle (should Darcy depart).

English is entering the prime of his career at 26 years old and looks to have his best years ahead of him. Though his tap work is among the league's best, it's his work-rate around that ground that truly stands out.

The 208cm Bulldog is comfortable slotting into defence to take intercept marks and leads all ruckmen for disposals per game. Whether he wants to leave a midfielder containing Marcus Bontempelli and Tom Liberatore is another question.

2. Sean Darcy

Restricted Free Agent

Fremantle's Darcy has been linked to a move home to Geelong, despite the ruckman suggesting he is comfortable in the west.

However, the 25-year-old will have to compete for stoppage attendance with up-and-comer Luke Jackson, which could influence his free agency decision.

Darcy had the second-most hitouts per game (39.13) in the 2023 season and is a force to be reckoned with around stoppages.

3. Dustin Martin

Unrestricted Free Agent

Dustin Martin was once the biggest name in football, and though his prime is past him, it's clear the three-time Norm Smith Medallist can still play.

As a midfielder-forward, Martin narrowly missed out on an All-Australian team selection in 2023, showcasing how dangerous he can be in a forward line.

Gold Coast, under new coach Damien Hardwick, is expected to chase the AFL star next season with hopes it can compete for a premiership in the near future.

4. Hugh McCluggage

Restricted Free Agent

Brisbane midfielder Hugh McCluggage is sure to attract attention from Victoria rivals if left unsigned for long.

The classy ball user was instrumental in the Lions' run to the grand final and was taken with the club's No.1 pick in the 2016 draft.

McCluggage has the attributes to fit into any midfield and can rotate between outside and inside roles, but it will be hard to pry him from Brisbane.

5. Todd Marshall

Restricted Free Agent

Port Adelaide's Todd Marshall is the best key forward to qualify for free agency in 2024.

The 198cm attacker will be tough to lure from the Power, but presents as one of the most promising spearheads in the league.

Marshall kicked 45 goals in a career-best 2022 season, before dropping in form this year. At his best, the 25-year-old can lead an offence and is a deadeye in front of goal.

6. Oliver Florent

Restricted Free Agent

Sydney utility Oliver Florent is a solid AFL-level contributor who could yet develop into a star. The 25-year-old is able to play at half back or on-ball and can also drift forward to kick goals.

Florent has already played 142 games in his career, meaning he offers experience and versatility for potentially interested Victorian clubs.

Though there's no indication the Sydney mainstay wants to return home, rival contract offers will likely come next season.

7. Liam Duggan

Restricted Free Agent

It's unlikely that Liam Duggan will seek a move from West Coast, despite their troubles. But, if the situation worsens at the club, the Victorian could look for a fresh start.

Duggan's excellent 2023 season went under the radar amid the Eagles' troubles, with the half back winning plenty of the ball from defence.

There's little doubt that the 26-year-old could make a major impact at a contending club, should he choose to entertain rival offers.

8. Dion Prestia

Unrestricted Free Agent

Richmond premiership-winner Dion Prestia, who has already hinted at the possibility of finishing his career in Queensland, looms as a likely shifter in 2024 free agency.

Set to turn 32 upon the conclusion of the 2024 season, the big-bodied midfielder would be a valuable leader at the Suns under Hardwick.

Prestia's responsibilites have dropped with the inclusion of midfielders Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper, but he still has plenty to offer at AFL level.

9. Andrew McGrath

Restricted Free Agent

Andrew McGrath is entering a crossroads in his career. The former No.1 pick played an important defensive role in his seventh season at Essendon, but has yet to break out as a star.

A shift into the midfield at a rival club could tempt McGrath, while others may see him as a half back runner.

At 25 years of age with plenty of upside, the talented Bomber would be a solid pickup for a crosstown rival.

10. Willem Drew

Restricted Free Agent

While perhaps not a household name, Willem Drew is a key contributor to a strong Port Adelaide midfield.

The 25-year-old can tag opposition stars, extract ground balls, and consistently stick tackles. He also didn't miss a game in the 2023 season.

Drew doesn't have the star power of others in free agency, but will no doubt be viewed as a valuable defensive piece in any midfield mix.
